Carmine Magazine: What drives you to create? Also, what inspires you and your work?
Julia Guzman: I’m driven to create most days by how I’m feeling emotionally. I think my best work was made on a day where I craved to be alone and shut out the world. I’m inspired a lot by song lyrics, magazines, emotions, teeth, glasses and pouty lips.
CM: Were you formally trained in art or self taught? Do you think it has helped you or hindered you?
JG: I’m a self taught artist and sometimes it’s really frustrating because it’s a hit or miss process. Traditionally it’s harder especially when you’re exploring newer mediums but it’s also fun to learn through the process. Digitally I love that I taught myself programs like Adobe photoshop or Illustrator because now I’m completely comfortable using them in my own way.
