Carmine Magazine: How would you define your style?
Heather ‘Makani’: Heavily influenced by internet artists? That and I guess it’s definitely a Western style. Most would say it’s Disney style, which I take as a very large compliment :) though it is not specifically geared to be such.
CM: What things inspire and influence you and your artwork?
HM: I hate to say “the internet” again but it’s true! We have so much access to artists from all over the world, both famous and not so famous, and I get inspiration from anyone who’s styles I appreciate. Rarely it’ll be music or a general concept that I draw inspiration from, but more often than not, I draw for entertainment, and therefore draw what entertains me, and that means lots of fan art.
CM: Do you listen to music when you create? Describe your perfect creative work environment.
HM: A lot of times when I’m drawing, I won’t notice if there’s music on or not, so I could take or leave audio ambiance. I do like to be alone or at least not interacting with anyone else while I draw, and I like to not feel crowded. Other than that, I’m not really picky.
CM: What mediums do you work in the most? Why do you use them?
HM: Besides pencils, I use digital media, such as Photoshop and Open Canvas. I am someone who doesn’t really plan a whole lot in advance and would rather just try things as I go, so the ability to just hit ‘Undo’ if I do something I don’t like is priceless haha. And frankly I’m just not very good at any real media so I find it to be a waste of time, really.
CM: Name a few of your favorite artists.
HM: Norman Rockwell, Franz Hals, Pierre Alary, Matt Rhodes.
CM: If there was one style of art that you could take up what would it be?
HM: I’d really love to be able to paint really detailed Baroque oil paintings.
