Carmine Magazine: How would you define your style?
Rosemary Travale: Quirky, cute, and colourful.
CM: What things inspire and influence you and your artwork?
RT: Oh wow, there is so much! I really love things like cartoons, comics, adventure movies and video games. Things that can covey an engaging story. Stuff that has a really good design sense and colour palette that is really fun! The whole aesthetic of children’s books from the 1950’s is amazing. It had a really big influence on me as a kid and still does today. Basically I just like silly and ridiculous things that everyone can laugh at and enjoy, and that is the kind of atmosphere I try to convey in my illustrations!
CM: Do you listen to music when you create? Describe your perfect creative work environment.
RT: I listen to loads of music while I work. One of my favourites is Ratatat, since it’s awesome high energy melodic stuff. I also like to listen to podcasts such as Indie Spinner Rack, The Sound Of Young America, 1UP Yours, and Retronauts. Sometimes I listen to the soundtracks of adventure movies because it makes me feel like I am saving the world and battling art demons all from my desk. I just kind of clear a space and start drawing!
CM: What mediums do you work in the most? Why do you use them?
RT: All my sketches and things are usually in black pen or marker. I like Stabilo point 88 pens and Faber Castell Brush pens. I paint all my finals with Holbein Acryla Gouache usually on hot press watercolour paper. I am a big fan of how the acryla gouache it handles and the permanentness of it. Plus the colours just really pop.
CM: Name a few of your favorite artists.
RT: Herge, Mary Blair, Edward Gorey, Brett Helquist, Joann Sfar, Chris Turnham, Scott Campbell
CM: If there was one style of art that you could take up what would it be?
RT: I’d really like to attempt doing tile mosaics sometime. It’s like the original pixel art! I’ve just recently started silk screening, so I am working on mastering that in my spare time and next year I will be taking a computer animation course that I am very excited about.
