Carmine Magazine: How would you define your style?
Katie West: My photography style is honest, erotic and cathartic too.
CM: What things inspire and influence you and your artwork?
KW: My moods and what’s going on in my life influence my work the most, and then a million other things inspire it; different artists, colours I see, locations, the weather!
CM: Do you listen to music when you create?
KW: No, I’m kind of a freak in that sense. I rarely listen to music. I also watch TV on mute.
CM: Describe your perfect creative work environment.
KW: An old house, with lots of light, lots of open space, silent and with many different rooms so I never run out of inspiration.
CM: What mediums do you work in the most? Why do you use them?
KW: I only do photography, and I shoot with digital, film and sometimes Polaroid. I’m sort of artistically challenged in every other medium and can’t ever achieve what I’m striving for.
CM: Name a few of your favorite artists.
KW: Rose and Olive (their flickr), Francesca Woodman, Miles Aldridge. I love a lot of artists who I’ve found online through Flickr or other sites.
CM: If there was one style of art that you could take up what would it be?
KW: I would love to be able to paint. Big, huge paintings. That always seems like it would be such a great experience.
