Carmine Magazine: How would you define your style?
Katie West: My photography style is honest, erotic and cathartic too.

CM: What things inspire and influence you and your artwork?
KW: My moods and what’s going on in my life influence my work the most, and then a million other things inspire it; different artists, colours I see, locations, the weather!

Carmine Magazine: How would you define your style?
Mae Jane: Creatively speaking, I’d say it’s definitely mixed media, a combination of collage with vintage & found elements, illustrations in ink & splashed with dollops of color. My work ranges from soft woodland creatures to podling girls casting emotional perception & even simple elements from nature such as trees, antlers, & flowers.

CM: What things inspire and influence you and your artwork?
MJ: I’m inspired by nature, emotion, personal growth, & the magical unknown. Our natural surrounding environment is one of my biggest influences, the other is my journey on this planet. How I perceive things & spill them from my brain is unique to the art that I end up creating. Concepts find me & I always let my imagination go, wherever it needs to.

Carmine Magazine: How would you define your style?
Cassandra Warren: I have the hardest time articulating an answer to this question more than any other, so I apologize in advance! I suppose it’s a little technical, a little folky, sometimes wistful. Someone once told me that my drawings remind them of 1920’s storybook art. Although I’m not sure how true this is, I liked that description best.

CM:What things inspire and influence you and your artwork?
CW: Nature and biology, hands down. Every natural thing in this world is fantastically and interestingly shaped and constructed. The curve of an apple, the way the feathers are lined up on a bird wing, the complexity of skeletons – it’s all endlessly fascinating.

Carmine Magazine: How would you describe your style?
Serpenthes: I want to say that anyone with eyes will be able to come up with some adjectives and expletives on their own… but I’ll say it’s like you traveled back in time and somewhere along the way you screwed up and killed an ant or saved a person and so now everything in time and universe is just a little off.

CM: Is art a hobby, profession or obsession for you?
S: It’s an obsession. It’s on my mind just about every single moment of the day. Everything looks like a photograph or a clip from a film or music video or a potential sketch.
There are several pieces that I’ve done that will be put together as a book eventually. So hopefully then it’ll be a profession as well.

Carmine Magazine: Water towers, birds and pills. What is it about these objects that inspire you?
Catherine Lawrence: Water towers- Well, this is one is easy- water towers remind me of new york city, a place that I loved on sight. Such strange structures in the most urban place; they’re like strange cake toppers, each one a different shape and size, held up on spindly legs… theres something so appealing about how they are shaped, as well. They also give SUCH a kick ass silhouette when printed in black and white. Reminiscent of rockets! Secret places to swim! Echo-y! Fabulous all around!
Pills- Well this one is about my struggle with anxiety disorder, which I’ve had for many years, but have not had medication for for almost 4 years now. I hid a lot behind the pills on the advice of doctors and so I like to explore how pills eclipsed all problems, and meditate on how the meds would help, potentially, if I didn’t have to feel anything. Ultimately I use the imagery in what I hope is a wry and humourous way, especially with works that have text behind them; under the massive colourful “make-me-feel-good” pill, is the truth, the panic, the fear.
Crows- I just love crows. They’re so intelligent and funny and the silhouette appeals to me as well.

CM: Do you listen to music when you create? What is the perfect creative setting for you to get your work done in?
CL:Sometimes I do, sometimes I don’t. The best place for me to work is in my tiny study at my desk/easel where everything I need is within arms’ reach. Day is best, I work best alone, with a cat interfering. Hey, I like a challenge :P
